According to Ramayan, Sigiriya may be the Alakamandava (City of the Gods) that was built up before 50 centuries ago by King Kubera who was the half-brother of Ravana (Ravan) as described in the Ramayanaya.

Originally, it's the palace of Kuber. Later, taken by Ravan. Even Pushpak Viman was owned by Kuber before Ravana.
Seems like the only way to get up there in those days must be the Pushpaka Vimana. Ravana used this as his palace. Nuwara Eliya & Sigiriya are two most important places of Ramayana trail in Sri Lanka.
